Taiwan Aquaculyure History

1661-1962 Tranditional Period
The earliest development of Taiwanese aquaculture is characterized by extensive stocking. During this period, aquaculture was regarded as a sideline occupation.
1963-1969 Fundamental Period

Artificial propagation technology of grass carps, grass shrimps and mullets was developed in this period, laying the foundation for the subsequent development of the aquaculture industry in Taiwan.

1970-1979 Expansion Period

According to the artificial propagation technological innovation and the development of industrial chain, this period led to the intensification and evolve into an enterprise aquaculture.

1980-1987 Golden Age

Exporting the 9500-metric-ton yield of grass shrimps hit the highest record in the world in 1987.

1988-1989 Decline Stage

The severe drop in aquaculture yield was caused by a pandemic shrimp disease, over exploitation on groundwater, and excessive cultivation on the fish farms.

1990-1993 Adjustment Period

The government promoted the circulating water, net cages and whole mariculture through the sole proprietorship, the joint venture, and the active consultation.

1995-1999 Transitional Development

Mariculture diversified and successfully bred many artificial feeding species like marine fish, shrimps and shellfish.

2000-NOW Sustainability Period

This period has focused on the refinement of seedlings, vaccines, ornamental fish and shrimps, and other farmed fish and shrimps to attain the sustainable aquaculture management.

PINTUNG– Giant Freshwater Prawn

Ligang,Yanpu,and Neipu Townships are the primary giant freshwater prawn culture areas in Taiwan;the yield output,and area of prawn farming in these townships constitute more than 90% of Taiwan’s total production.

CHANGHWA– Ecological Aquaculture of Fish and Shellfish Polyculture

Food safety and environmental protection are paramount in aquaculture and can be attained through following appropriate ecological culture practices.Five principles from traditional aquaculture,namely low-density culture,polyculture,groundwater preservation,the prevention of herbicide use,and the avoidance of animal medication must be fulfilled for fish farms to coexist with the environment around them.
